The sound of clicking needles and hooks can be heard in Rampton village as they prepare to make, sew on to netting, then erect a floral cascade from All Saints Church tower.
More than 2,000 colourful woollen flowers have been made and work is underway to sew them on to 5mx20m netting. Once erected the stunning cascade will resemble a rainbow, shining a light on a new era and King.
The cascade will be a central part of the village celebrations for the King’s coronation on Saturday 6th May, followed by a service of Thanksgiving on Sunday 7th at 10.30am.
Lynette Dear, leading on the initial part of this project, said: “The response from local ladies, their friends and relatives, has been outstanding. My garage is acting as a workroom with trestle tables and boxes of flowers waiting to be sewn on.”
A team is ready for the final part of the project – putting the cascade in place at the end of April (an approach may be made to the local fire brigade to assist!).
The church is ‘at risk’ and the community continues to fundraise to maintain the building – activities include fashion shows and craft fairs. Donations when visiting the floral cascade will go towards repairing the church.
The plan is for the cascade to stay in place until the end of the year; go along and take a selfie with the cascade as a background!
