Capturing the magic in Native American portraits

Visit Retford Arts Hub at 11 Churchgate in March to see Retford-based artist Annie Turner’s exhibition ‘Recaptured’, which is the result of two year’s work on Native American Portraiture.

Annie,is working in a new style of portraiture. Her process makes use of bold acrylic colours which produce modern, daring and vibrant colour schemes for her depictions.

The exhibition’s name signifies the transformation of early black and white photography into contemporary colour portraits. When she begins her process, the artist has no clear idea as to the final colour combinations and how the many layers will develop. This is where the magic happens.

According to the artist, a painting can come together in a matter of a few hours but sometimes the process is much longer until a satisfactory balance of colour value and tone is achieved. Each painting is a very individual and separate journey.
The inspiration for the exhibition came from meeting a Navajo Indian who plays the Navajo Flute – Fred Keams. He attends his traditional ceremonies and is passionate about his identity and race. Annie met Fred online around the same time as discovering from a news report how challenging it is for desert dwelling Navajo Indians to have a regular water supply.

Constant shortages are due to global warming. However, there is a charity known as Dig Deep who are using the latest solar and other green technologies to provide a source of water to the Navajo People. She therefore hopes to provide an awareness of this predicament and as the motivating factor for her work, create some funds towards this worthy cause.

The exhibition is showing for the whole month of March and framed prints and printed cards will also be available to purchase.
