Don’t sit under the apple tree…

With anyone else but me! Retford Community Singers recently sang to a newly planted tree, which was certainly a ground-breaking event in community involvement. Leader Janet Wood had a big birthday some months ago and, knowing she wasn’t one for conventional gifts, committee member Dawn had the inspired idea of donating a tree in Janet’s name to Muddy Fork, the wellbeing and mental health charity based at the Idle Valley Nature Reserve. Janet was delighted, and the charity immediately said they’d love a crab apple tree – which should be hardy, with spring blossom and scarlet fruits in the autumn. Their chosen variety was Red Sentinel, which met all these criteria and more.

The tree was supplied by Green Mile Trees and duly planted in time for National Tree Week. It was declared ‘an absolute beaut’ by Harri Phillips, Muddy Fork Coordinator.

A few days later some of the hardier members of the choir gathered to welcome the tree with a lively version of the wartime song ‘Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree’. The sun shone (despite an earlier storm), there was cake and the choir sang a short version of Stevie Wonder’s ‘Happy Birthday’. A unique event and great fun! Find Retford Community Singers Facebook page for a recording of the song and photos.

New singers are always made very welcome by the friendly informal choir – men and women of any age, whether they have previously sung with a group or are a complete novice. The group mainly sings just for pleasure, rather than polished performance, drawing on anything with good harmonies.
