Autumn has well-and-truly arrived and with that the Inner Wheel Club of Retford will be celebrating their 76th charter in October. This is celebrated with a charter lunch at Ye Olde Bell, Barnby Moor. It is a special occasion, with representatives from ten different clubs in district 22 and special guests District Chairman Jacquie and past-president Margaret. It is always a lovely occasion to catch up with old friends and make new ones.
Retford Inner Wheel was founded in 1945; it must have been a year of great change, with optimism following the end of the war tinged with loss and sadness from the preceding years. Perhaps some of us are experiencing these contradictory emotions now, after the ongoing pandemic and world problems of 2020. From the first president in 1945, Mrs WH Loseby, to the present day, more than 70 ladies have taken on the role – all with different tales to tell from their year in office.
Back in the warmer days of August, conversation turned to how everyone had cleared their cupboards and wardrobes in lockdown – and how much stuff everybody had! This led to a successful stall on the Retford Friday market, selling items for charity. Nothing sold for more than £5.00 and a good amount was raised for the charity fund. Whatever was left was taken to Bassetlaw Hospice shop. Keep an eye out for the club at the Christmas market!
If anyone is interested in joining, the Inner Wheel meets on the second Thursday of every month at Ye Olde Bell. There they enjoy a meal, maybe a speaker and a bit of business. For further information, please contact retfordinnerwheel@gmail.com.
