As summer takes hold, members of Worksop CSC Crown Green Bowling Club are enjoying a busy programme of league fixtures and friendly in-house matches.
Both the men’s and women’s teams have travelled to clubs across their respective leagues and have welcomed opponents back to Worksop for return fixtures. Along the way, players are collecting points that will determine both the individual and team champions at the end of the season.
Like many clubs and organisations, the prolonged spell of hot weather has disrupted some matches. However, the health and safety of members remains the priority, and cancelled fixtures will be rearranged later in the season wherever possible, working alongside the league and team captains.
As agreed at the Annual General Meeting, the club held an in-house mixed doubles competition in June. The coveted Herbert Fritz John Trophy, recently restored by club member Tony Robertson, was presented by Beryl Wilson to this year’s winners, Charlie Calladine and Kath Woods.
Throughout the season, the club continues to hold Sunday morning open sessions for all players, particularly those new to the game or anyone interested in trying the enjoyable sport of crown green bowling.
The season runs until the end of September, so there is still plenty of time to visit the club, find out what it has to offer and enjoy a cooling drink in the cricket clubhouse while watching a match.
On Sunday 19th July, members competed for the Maurice Buckingham Memorial Trophy. This singles competition between the men’s and women’s members honours the memory of Maurice, a long-serving committee member and trustee.
The past two years have presented plenty of challenges for the volunteers who maintain the green because of the changing weather conditions. The club extends its sincere thanks to them for their continued hard work and dedication.
All members are looking forward to another successful summer season.
