The first date for the diary is Friday 11th September, when the museum’s beautiful garden will provide the perfect backdrop for a special open-air performance of The Great Gatsby. Audiences are invited to step back into the glamour and intrigue of the Roaring Twenties and enjoy this much-loved classic under the stars. Visitors can bring a chair, pack a picnic and settle in for an evening of live theatre in one of Retford’s most picturesque settings. The celebrations continue the following day as Bassetlaw Museum takes part in Heritage Open Day on Saturday 12th September with a fascinating programme dedicated to the region’s proud mining history. The day begins at 11.00am with a talk exploring the important role of Pit Ponies, the hardworking animals that were once an essential part of life underground. Visitors will then be treated to performances by the ever-popular Worksop Miners Welfare Band at 12.30pm and 1.30pm, bringing the sounds and traditions of the coalfield community to life.
There will also be the opportunity to explore the museum’s new exhibition, Black Dust, Bright Stories, which combines artwork and mining artefacts to tell the stories of local mining communities. Alongside the exhibition, visitors can view a unique personal collection of mining lamps, offering a fascinating insight into the working lives of generations of miners.
