Inspired by 1940s and 1950s fashion, Dressed to Kill at Bassetlaw Museum showcases a selection of garments reflecting the style and glamour of the era. From an elegant evening dress once owned by Mrs Katherine Mary Darley of Ranby Hall to a smart striped suit by Montague Burton, ‘The Tailor of Taste’, the display evokes the world of classic film noir.
The exhibition features more than individual garments. Each outfit has been carefully displayed with hats and accessories to create a complete look and give visitors a real sense of period style.
Among the highlights is an ‘ocelot’ fur coat made from dyed sheepskin, designed to imitate the distinctive markings of the wildcat. As a more affordable alternative to genuine exotic fur, it would still have made a striking fashion statement.
Dressed to Kill runs until January 2027. Visitors to the museum before the end of August can also enjoy The Age of Cine: Cameras, Projectors and the Magic of Film exhibition.
