Thoresby Colliery Band has enjoyed a successful year so far. Having returned to the Championship Section in January, the band secured a respectable seventh place at this year’s Area Contest, ensuring its place in the Championship Section for next year.
In April, the band performed a joint concert with Long Eaton Band. After each band performed its own programme, the evening concluded with two joint pieces. The audience thoroughly enjoyed the sound of the combined bands, and it is an experience both groups hope to repeat in the future. Success continued on Saturday 14th June when Thoresby Colliery Band won the Wetherby Drovers Day Hymn and March Competition. The adjudicators praised the band’s musicality and the quality of its ensemble playing.
A week later, the band entertained visitors in Edensor with three performances in the sunshine. At the time of writing, members are preparing for a joint concert with Southwell Minster Choir and Southwell Minster Chorale, where they will perform a newly commissioned work for band and choir. The band will also be saying goodbye to Musical Director Luke Pallister as he moves on to new opportunities. Luke noted that both his first and final contests with the band ended in victory. Members thanked him for his hard work and dedication, and wished him every success for the future.
Looking ahead, the band is preparing for the Wychavon Contest at the end of October before turning its attention to a busy programme of Christmas concerts, culminating in the annual Family Carol Concert with the Nottingham Harmonic Society at the Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham.
