For more than a century, the Lincoln and Lindsey Blind Society (LLBS) has been a cornerstone of support for blind and sight impaired people across Greater Lincolnshire. Serving over 1,750 individuals, the charity provides practical assistance, emotional support, and community connection to ensure that people living with sight loss can lead confident, independent lives. In Gainsborough, LLBS’s presence continues to grow, offering vital services that make a meaningful difference to local residents.
Founded in 1921, LLBS brings together the legacy of several historic sight loss organisations. Today, its work is delivered by a small team of Sight Impairment Officers and more than 125 trained volunteers. Their support ranges from home visits and one to one guidance to group activities that help people rebuild confidence, maintain independence, and stay socially connected.
One of the charity’s most valued services is its befriending programme. Volunteers offer companionship through regular phone calls or home visits, helping to reduce loneliness and provide reassurance for those who may feel isolated. Gainsborough residents are warmly encouraged to volunteer as befrienders, with demand for support in the town continuing to rise. Alongside befriending, LLBS offers a wide range of practical assistance. This includes technology advice, magnifier assessments, benefits advice, schools outreach, support groups and Talking Books and local newspapers. The charity also provides specialist equipment to help people manage daily tasks more easily and safely.

A key part of LLBS’s work in the town is the Gainsborough Support Group. This friendly group offers social activities, giving visually impaired residents the chance to meet others, share experiences, and enjoy talks and entertainment. For many, it is a lifeline – an opportunity to regain confidence, build friendships, and feel part of a community that understands sight loss. As an independent charity receiving no statutory funding, LLBS relies on donations, grants, and the dedication of volunteers. Its impact across Gainsborough is profound.

For anyone wishing to make a difference, volunteering with LLBS is a powerful way to support local people. For more information visit http://www.llbs.co.uk or call 01507 604605.
