Rotherham Day – Paint the Town Red
Winthrop Gardens in Wickersley is delighted to be part of this exciting project and wants to do all it can to make the very first Rotherham Day a huge success on Friday 18th September.
Rotherham Day is about putting Rotherham on the map and sharing the many positive things about the town. Its theme is: “Honouring the Past, Celebrating the Present, Inspiring the Future.” There will be lots happening on Friday 18th, Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th September, and Winthrop has several activities planned.
Rotherham Show – Bake Your Cake Red
Winthrop is once again sponsoring some of the baking classes of the ‘Made in Rotherham’ competition at Rotherham Show on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th September. In advance of Rotherham Day, there is a special class called ‘Bake Your Cake Red’. Any cake, traybake or buns must feature the colour red in their appearance – for example, a red velvet cake, a cake decorated with raspberries or one iced with red icing. The class is open to all ages, although children under 14 should specify their age in the description of their entry. Judging will consider taste, appearance and presentation. This is a great way to get everyone in the mood for Rotherham Day.
Friday 18th September – Red Charity Walk
Led by the Wednesday Walking Group, this charity walk will leave Winthrop at 11.00am. Anyone interested in a three- to four-mile walk is welcome to join in. Participants are encouraged to wear something red – a hat, T-shirt, shorts or trousers – and make a donation or collect sponsorship in advance. Saturday 19th September – Afternoon Tea in Red
As well as serving one of its renowned afternoon teas with a red theme, Winthrop will welcome local author Lisa Harford, who will give a short talk about her book, ‘I Killed Lucy’. There will also be musical entertainment from the Rotherham Hospice Choir. The afternoon will include a grand red charity raffle and donations of prizes would be very welcome. Guests are encouraged to wear something red. Tickets cost £25.00 per person and are available from Winthrop. Cash only, please.
Have you time to do a shift or two in the café?
Winthrop is looking for additional café volunteers on Tuesday mornings, Wednesday mornings and afternoons, and Thursday mornings. Shifts are three to four hours long and involve a range of roles including taking orders, preparing food and drinks, serving customers, clearing tables and washing pots. Previous catering experience is not essential, although it would be useful. More important is a willingness to provide a Warm Winthrop Welcome. Guidance and support will be provided. It is also a great opportunity to meet new people and make new friends.
Could you help make preserves?
With the soft fruit season under way, Winthrop is looking for volunteers to join its preserves team. Volunteers will need to complete food hygiene and allergy training, carried out online, and register as a home caterer with Environmental Health. These are essential safeguards for customers and the process is straightforward, with guidance and support available throughout. Winthrop reimburses home preservers for all costs involved. Winthrop Memory Café
The Winthrop Memory Café is held on the first and third Friday of each month and currently has vacancies for people living with dementia and their carers from the local community. Members enjoy a welcoming atmosphere, activities, conversation and fun. Upcoming plans include a birds of prey display, a trip to Cleethorpes and summer planting activities.
