Families, film lovers and sports fans are invited to make the most of the summer holidays as a giant outdoor screen transforms the heart of Rotherham into a free entertainment hub.
‘Big Screen Summer’ will bring a week of free blockbuster films, live international cricket and family-friendly activities to Snail Yard between Wednesday 19th and Thursday 27th August, creating another reason for people to visit the town centre and enjoy its growing cultural offer.
The programme includes live coverage of England’s Test match against Pakistan alongside screenings of family favourites including Mamma Mia!, Matilda the Musical, The LEGO Movie and Toy Story. Visitors can also enjoy a video game tournament hosted by Guild of Games, while selected days will feature themed walkabout entertainment to add to the festival atmosphere.
Leanne Buchan, Head of Cultural Programming at Rotherham Council, said: “Big Screen Summer is all about bringing people together and giving families and young people even more reasons to spend time in Rotherham town centre during the holidays.
“Last year’s Children’s Capital of Culture showed what’s possible when we create memorable experiences for local people, and we’re determined to keep that momentum going. Whether you’re a cricket fan, a film lover or simply looking for a fun, free day out with family and friends, there’s something for everyone. We hope people will come along, enjoy everything on offer and experience the vibrant atmosphere we’re continuing to build in the town centre.”
The free programme continues the legacy of Rotherham’s landmark year as the world’s first Children’s Capital of Culture, demonstrating the town’s ongoing commitment to creating exciting experiences for children, young people and families. It also comes as Rotherham has been shortlisted to become the UK’s first Town of Culture, recognising its ambition to place culture at the heart of the borough’s future.
Big Screen Summer forms part of Rotherham’s packed programme of events designed to encourage people to discover the town centre, support local businesses and enjoy high-quality cultural experiences throughout the year. The full programme and event information will be available via Rotherham Council’s website and social media channels.
