The Friends of Bassetlaw Museum (FoBM) begin this month’s report by correcting an error in their September submission. A museum tour was advertised for 8th December; the correct date is Friday 5th December. FoBM apologises for any confusion caused. Bookings are now being taken for tours on Friday 3rd October, Friday 7th November and Friday 5th December. To book, email fobm.tours@gmail.com or contact the museum.

FoBM will be hosting a talk by Angela Anwyl on Thursday 16th October. She will speak about music-making in Retford between 1896 and 1929, drawing on her two published books. The talk will feature pianist Muriel Spencer; organist, choirmaster, conductor and teacher Hamilton White; and music shop owner Walter Parke, along with the early years of the North Nottinghamshire Musical Competitions. Angela will also show a selection of photographs from the Welchman Collection and explain how Bassetlaw Museum’s resources have enhanced her research. Some items will be on display for the evening.

Angela’s talk will be preceded by FoBM’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), to be held at the museum on Grove Street, Retford, on Thursday 16th October at 7.00pm. The agenda will include reports from committee members, approval of the annual accounts, decisions about membership fees for 2025 and appointment of the new committee. All are welcome, including non-members (who are not eligible to vote). New members who join on the evening will have membership running through to the end of 2026. Refreshments will be available. FoBM have retired their previous Facebook page and launched a new one: Friends of Bassetlaw Museum – fobm. This is a work in progress; further updates will follow.

To learn more about the Friends or to join, email fobm.membership@gmail.com. Membership application forms are also available on the Bassetlaw Museum website.
