There is light at the end of the tunnel…

We’ve made it to 2021! If there is one word that sums up 2020 it would be ‘unprecedented’ – how many times did we hear it used? Something to celebrate were the vast numbers of people who volunteered, often for the first time, to help our local community. This tide of good will only magnified over the festive period as people stepped forward to fill the gap where more traditional services weren’t able to operate.
At the Volunteer Centre they ran their ‘12 Days of Kindness’, providing some ideas for small volunteering activities people could do from home at a time to suit them. Who doesn’t like the idea of being able to volunteer in pyjamas?
So here we are in January and the question is what has really changed? COVID is still with us and restrictions are likely to be in place for some time to come. However, last year proved that we are all capable of adapting, and the Volunteer Centre continue to provide support to groups to help them adapt their services to meet the needs of our community. They will continue to host their Virtual Coffee Mornings until at least March, and they still have the bi-monthly Voluntary Sector Forums.
The new year often makes people feel they have to make big changes, but for many people the same old struggles are still there. This can put a lot of pressure on people, so if you need help, their Social Prescribing team are ready to talk to you, albeit over the phone still.
It is hoped that as time goes on, more traditional voluntary opportunities will return, but the pandemic has also brought a range of new ones such as responder schemes and other very hands-on roles. Volunteering not only enables you to give something back, but is also a really good way to meet new people, learn new skills or try something new. If you are thinking about taking up a voluntary role do get in touch with Voluntary Centre Services.
Everyone at Voluntary Centre Services wishes you a very happy new year. At the current time all their services can be accessed via, call them on 01427 613470 or email
