The Royal British Legion (Retford and District)

by | 22 March 2024 | Community Event, Gainsborough, Heritage, Local Charity

The Retford and District branch of the Royal British Legion has already started planning fundraising and commemoration for the coming year.

The first event will be the Quiz Night on Friday 22nd March at Babworth Road Sports and Social Club, Retford. Doors open at 7.00pm for a 7.30pm start, allowing ample time to get a drink from the bar and get settled for the fun evening ahead.

The cost to enter is £3.00 per person and there is a maximum of six people in a team. Team entries are welcome but if you can’t make a team up you will be welcome to join one on the night. There will be a cash prize for the winning team. To enter please ring Judith Goodall on 01777 707152.

A team of volunteers will also be manning a stall on Charter Day, Monday 6th May. Hopefully many will be able to visit the stall to help not only with fundraising but also to find out more about the Legion’s work and the help that is available to anyone who has served in the armed forces for at least seven days.

2024 sees the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy. Operation Overlord was launched on 6th June 1944 and led to the successful liberation of German-occupied Western Europe. The Allies suffered heavy losses on the first day, but it proved to be the foothold that was necessary to press inland.

To mark this anniversary there will be an act of remembrance in Retford Market Square around the War Memorial. Timing has not yet been finalised, but it is likely to start no earlier than 10.30am. Everyone will be made welcome.
