By the time a play has finished then the preparation for the next one in any drama group’s season has already been started, so that auditions, casting, and rehearsals can take place in a timely manner.
In May Scunthorpe Little Theatre Club will take to the stage of The Plowright Theatre in Scunthorpe with the comedy A Bunch of Amateurs, written by Nick Newman and Ian Hislop (of Private Eye and Have I Got News for You fame).
It centres around fading Hollywood action hero Jefferson Steel who, in a bid to revive his flagging career, agrees to play King Lear in Stratford. Unfortunately, it is not Stratford upon Avon with the Royal Shakespeare Company, rather Stratford St John in Suffolk, and instead of treading the boards with the greats he is sharing the stage with a bunch of amateur actors in a converted barn.
This popular show with a very funny script pricks the pomposity of Hollywood while paying tribute to those wonderful people who give up their time to take part in amateur theatre.
