The Lincolnshire North Federation of Women’s Institutes was honoured to present a garden menu lunch with guests speakers Martin and Jill Fish.

The couple are a husband-and-wife team – he an experienced gardener with forkfuls of knowledge, and she a cookery writer of culinary renown. Having recently moved to Lincolnshire in search of new pastures, the pair show-cased their top tips on how to grow vegetables in the garden and how to cook them in the kitchen.

From the earth to the earthenware, the information was bite-size, friendly and informative on every level. Did you know there was such a thing as an egg and chip plant? The invention is a dual-cropping plant that grows both aubergines (also known as eggplant) and potatoes.

In these times of rising prices, it might be beneficial to use your garden to grow your own food stock. And with every penny saved you keep an extra penny in your purse, so don’t let the fruit on your trees go to waste! Pear and chocolate jam and apple flapjack trifle are just two of the treats you might be able to make with the produce in your back yard.

The Women’s Institute is always keen to champion home-grown and home-cooked so Martin and Jill’s book ‘Gardening on the Menu’ is a must for anyone wanting to turn their hand to nature. Find out more from their website www.martinfish.com.
