Retford and District Photographic Society

Retford and District Photographic Society’s (RDPS) second open competition provided some notable moments. Possibly the most unusual commentary from a judge accompanied Alan Burkwood’s shot of a train against a strong light with two men working on it.

Having judged all entries, Rob gave Alan top marks, but with a different shot, entitled Flyer, taken at another event. His shot of the train placed joint second with Lee Dalgleish’s gannet.

Lee featured in another strange coincidence on the night when he placed joint first with Alan, winning the colour print class with a squirrel perched precariously. This almost mirrored a shot of a zebra entitled Contortionist taken by Tom Coulson, which won the projected image class. Unusually both shots were taken from behind the animal, which would normally guarantee poor marks. On this occasion both were excellent shots and very sharp with a strong element of humour which made them stand out from the bunch.

The following week long-standing member Harold Gay, with his wife and granddaughter, came to model for a practical night of portraiture. They all take part in Steampunk events and came in their costumes. Members enjoyed the opportunity to practice their techniques with the benefit of good backgrounds and lights.

The group has its annual fun night planned for 22nd December, which is essentially a social occasion, with photo related quizzes etc., a buffet supper and plenty of time to socialise.

They meet again on 8th January with a bang – or is it a splash? – when David Keep returns to wow members with the second of his underwater presentations. His was one of the best-received presentations last year, so what better time to act on that resolution to do something different? If you decide to join after the New Year, the fee is 50% of the full year price.

For more information visit The club meets in St Joseph’s Hall, Babworth Road, Retford at 7.30pm on Mondays until the end of April 2024. A warm welcome awaits guests and potential members.
