Retford and District Photographic Society

January saw many Retford and District Photographic Society (RDPS) members travelling to the Sherwood Observatory in Sutton-in-Ashfield for an evening of learning about stargazing and astrophotography. The bitter cold should have made for great visibility, but sadly some clouds decided to move in and members had to be content with a look at Jupiter.

Other activities have taken place in Retford, including the ‘Panel of Three’ competition, which saw some excellent entries. Judge Dave Gibbins has worked with the group before and knows how they interpret the rules for providing three images which work together as a panel. The images must be on a theme or tell a story, but other aspects of the display are more subtly important.
At the end of the night, the following members were declared the winners:

  • Colour Print Class: ‘Common Whitethroat’ by Des Lloyd
  • Monochrome Print Class: ‘Shady Goings On’ by Andy Stephenson
  • DPI Class: ‘Looking Through Old Photos’ by Lee Dalgliesh

Members are looking forward to a lot more before the end of the season, but the ‘Print Portfolio’ competition should be a highlight when all entries will consist of four images of four different types.
RDPS meets on Monday nights at 7.30pm until 24th April. Full details can be found at www.retford-photographic.co.uk. If you contact the group in advance members will look out for you, or you can just go along on the night.
