Gainsborough Life reader Tom Ellis has been busy out and about with his camera and has taken this beautiful image of a well-known local landmark.
His description reads:

“This is colloquially known by most of the Gainsborough residents as ‘The Eight Arch Bridge’ and some refer to it as ‘The Eight Arches’. It is located on the road out towards Bawtry from Gainsborough, the A631. The segment of the A631 that it is attached to is known as ‘Ramper Road’ or ‘The Flood Road’, with the latter having more of a significance to the premise of the structure.

“In history, the bridge was a well known meet up point for people.

“The theory behind the bridge is to protect the town of Gainsborough from the River Trent. If the river bursts its banks, the water will go on to the fields on the Nottinghamshire side of the waterway. These fields are also known as ‘flood plains’, hence the name. ‘The Flood Road’ (A631 to Bawtry) is on an embankment so any heavy rain that invites flood water, the water will run through the eight arches in order to try and protect the embankment so the road doesn’t get flooded.

“The A631 road from Gainsborough is used regularly and will cause traffic chaos if it shuts.”
