Do you or someone you know have a visual impairment? Help is available.
If someone has a sight impairment – or if a family member or friend may be struggling with their vision – the Lincoln and Lindsey Blind Society may be able to assist. Based in Louth, the charity supports visually impaired people throughout North and North East Lincolnshire, East and West Lindsey, and Lincoln City, including the Gainsborough area.
Severe visual impairment, including blindness or partial sight that cannot be corrected by glasses, can be extremely debilitating. When sight is lost, it often feels like losing more than just the ability to see – it can feel like the world is falling apart. People affected by sight loss appreciate empathy, but they also need equipment, practical advice, and training to continue living independently and confidently.
It is not necessary to be formally registered with a visual impairment or have a referral from a doctor or optometrist to access these services. Anyone – the individual themselves, a family member, or a friend – can get in touch directly. Arrangements can be made for one of the Sight Impairment Officers to visit and carry out an assessment. In addition to the Sight Impairment Officers, there is a dedicated team of volunteers who receive ongoing support, guidance, and training. They assist in a variety of roles, including supporting social groups, recording talking newspapers, befriending, assisting with administration, fundraising, IT support, or serving as Trustees. Anyone interested in volunteering is encouraged to get in touch.
Currently, 1,660 individuals are supported in the area – 75% of whom are over 65 – with new referrals coming in each week. Many more people use these services without being on the formal register. The charity is independent and receives no government, local authority, or statutory funding. All income comes from bequests, charitable donations, and grants.
