Lea Women’s Institute

Can you decipher the cryptic quiz question to reveal the name of a famous sweet treat? ‘Nutty punishment’ was the clue posed to the Lea Women’s Institute.

They were challenged to put on their thinking caps at their monthly meeting where the fun activity was a quiz night. Light-hearted rivalry saw the teams battle it out to snatch victory, where the prize was… sausage rolls and cake for everyone!

It was nice to enjoy a simple pleasure after the dizzying thrill of rubbing shoulders with celebrity. Just recently, they had welcomed guest speaker Rebecca Grimbleby who was a finalist on The Great British Sewing Bee. The ladies learned that the show isn’t stage-managed; the tears, smiles and emotional responses are real.

During the series Rebecca lived in an apartment in Canary Wharf with other contestants. The participants are sworn to secrecy, which was tricky because midway through the show Rebecca met Harry who went on to become her fiancé. The days of filming are long and the tasks are tough, but it’s given needlework a much-needed makeover.

In complete contrast, the world of crime came under the microscope during the Women’s Institute Science Day in Market Rasen. Dr Nicola Crewe, Senior Lecturer in Food Microbiology, set the scene for forensic science. Fingerprinting, chromatography, blood splatters and hair samples were examined to watch the detectives at their work.

Ladies! It all happens at Lea Village Hall, DN21 5JA where you will be assured of a warm welcome. Meetings are on the first Thursday of every month.
