Despite wet and then cold weather over the past couple of months, Gainsborough in Bloom volunteers have continued to be active. Planters around the town have been refreshed with winter pansies, and around 60 perennial plants have been installed in the Morton Corner beds. These will complement the self-seeding wildflowers already in place and should look particularly good once warmer weather arrives. The perennials will continue to flower year after year, reducing the workload compared with the annual planting previously used on this site. The plants were supplied by Evelyn from Laughton, who grows them to raise funds for Cancer UK, and a donation was made to support this cause.
The Gainsborough in Bloom AGM takes place in February, and due to various personal commitments, one or two members will be stepping back from the committee this year. The group is also seeking a new chairperson and would welcome expressions of interest from anyone willing to take on this role. The committee meets around three to four times a year to plan activities, and many committee members are also active volunteers who help whenever they can.
Gainsborough in Bloom is a friendly group of volunteers, and depending on how things develop in the coming weeks, a decision may need to be made at the AGM about whether to enter the East Midlands Awards this year. Entering involves a significant amount of work, particularly for the secretary, who is also stepping back. While this would be disappointing, the group would continue its work around the town regardless.
