Gainsborough Heritage Centre

At Gainsborough Heritage Centre, volunteers really keep the wheels turning.

Like many other charity-based organisations, it isn’t always plain sailing. Getting people to give up their valuable time can be a difficult task, but the Centre is fortunate to have a wonderful team led by hardworking chairman Andy Birkitt and his wife Lynne. The whole team shares the desire to keep Gainsborough’s heritage alive.

The town’s small museum is stacked from floor to ceiling with files, artifacts and memorabilia from Gainsborough’s thriving industrial past. It’s a fascinating place, well worth the visit – but it needs to maintain visitor numbers to keep going.

With several volunteers needing to move on due to ill-health or for personal reasons, the Centre is keen to attract new volunteers. They are grateful for the dedication shown by valuable people like Bob and Linda Clarke, Susan Edlington, and Pauline Jackson (who has recently decided to retire). To these people and everyone else in the tea, they give heartfelt thanks.

If you are interested in joining this friendly team, contact the Centre. It is situated on the corner of North Street, DN21 2HS, open on Tuesday and Saturday. The cost to enter is just £3.00, with children free if accompanied by an adult – a great opportunity during the school holidays to spend some nostalgic time with parents or grandparents!

There’s quiz for the kids to enjoy as they go, and clothes to try on for a photo shoot. The Centre’s well-stocked shop and cosy café cost nothing to visit, and the building is disability-friendly with toilets and a lift to all floors.

The Centre prides itself on being the only place to offer copies of original Marshalls drawings, full size or scaled down to A4 mounted prints. They make fantastic gifts!

So why not make plans to go and see for yourself?
