Gainsborough Heritage Centre

Time is precious. We all have those moments in our lives when we get the overwhelming urge to go back in time. Something will trigger a memory – maybe a childhood toy, school days, old homes or demolished buildings. Possibly it’s friends we’ve made along the way – family and friends who may now be absent from our lives.

It’s human nature to reminisce, and to crave a return to those (sometimes apocryphal) ‘good old days’.

Gainsborough Heritage Association aims to preserve these memories. It was started by a few enthusiastic young lads from the town who shared a vision to preserve Gainsborough’s history. Thanks to sheer hard work and determination, their dream became reality and Gainsborough Heritage Association was born.

Thanks to a team of hard-working volunteers, it’s gone from strength to strength. For just £3.00 you can immerse yourself in nostalgia at Gainsborough Heritage Centre. Take that step back in time with artefacts and memorabilia packed into the museum.

For those wanting to trace their ancestors, the research room is packed from floor to ceiling with files to help get started, with dedicated volunteers on hand to help you find the information and photos you need.

The Centre welcomes pre-arranged private visits, which can incorporate tea and cake in the cosy café; just contact the Centre to plan your visit.

It’s a charity-based organisation that relies heavily on funding and memberships so, if you haven’t already been (or even if you fancy a return trip!), add it to your to do list. It’s an excellent idea for the holidays, with children going free with a paying adult. There is a quiz sheet for them to complete as they go, and many costumes to try on from days gone by.

The Heritage Centre is disability-friendly, with lifts to all floors. It is situated on the corner of North Street, DN21 2HS. Staff look forward to welcoming you!
