A visit to the Gainsborough Heritage Centre is highly recommended. It’s a hidden gem located on North Street, Gainsborough DN21 2HS, close to Marshall’s Yard, and stepping through its doors will transport you back in time, evoking a strong sense of nostalgia.
The Centre has been bustling with activity in recent months, including the creation and distribution of newsletters, cataloguing exhibits, refreshing displays, and organising popular group visits. The dedicated volunteers deserve recognition for their remarkable commitment to preserving Gainsborough’s heritage in their spare time.
This year, the town celebrates the 150th anniversary of Gainsborough Trinity Football Club, established in 1873. Remarkably, the club remained in the second division until 1912, making Gainsborough one of the smallest towns in England to have a team in the league. The exhibition room pays a fitting tribute to the local team’s history, and the Centre extends its well wishes for the upcoming season.
As previously mentioned, group visits are highly sought-after and can be tailored to meet specific requirements. Schools, care homes, history groups, and others are encouraged to get in touch or visit the Centre for further information and to discuss their needs.
Being a charity, the Centre heavily relies on visitations and membership fees, which are just £15.00 per year and grant unlimited access whenever the centre is open. The reference room is filled from floor to ceiling with files containing written information and photographs of workplaces, schools, businesses, and more, with photocopies available for purchase.
The Centre is disability-friendly, equipped with toilets and a lift to all floors. Visitors can explore the well-stocked shop and enjoy refreshments and homemade cake at the cosy café. The cost of admission is only £3.00, with children accompanied by an adult admitted for free.
For enquiries, visit the Centre’s Facebook page. During opening hours on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 10.00am to 4.00pm, you can also contact the centre on 01427 610526.
