Gainsborough Folk Club’s new season

by | 10 September 2018 | Gainsborough, Hobbies, Music

Unlike many folk clubs, Gainsborough Folk Club does not close for the summer. However, we always think of our first meeting in September as the start of a new season. This year, that falls on 14th September and we meet fortnightly after that, upstairs at the Melrose Club on Melrose Road.

In recent weeks, people who used to go the folk clubs many years ago have popped in to see us and found out what they had been missing. Perhaps you too could fall into that category, or perhaps you are someone who always wanted to play a musical instrument but never dared to try, or perhaps you never had an opportunity. Our ukulele group meets at 7.30pm on club nights and we are always happy to welcome newcomers. We even have ukuleles to lend to you while you decide whether to buy your own. These we bought some years ago, thanks to a generous grant from the Thonock Trust and they have started dozens of people off on a new musical adventure. Our ukuleles have lots of previous experience, so you don’t need any!

The Folk Club part of the evening begins at 8.45pm and is usually a Singaround. That means that everyone has a chance to sing a song, play a tune, recite a poem or even tell a joke. It isn’t compulsory however, and you are most welcome to come and just listen — we need audience as well as performers! We do have some guest nights to look forward to later in the season.

Your first meeting is free. After that admission is £2.00 per meeting, unless you decide to pay for a year’s membership which works out considerably cheaper. A separate admission charge is made for guest nights. For further information, please visit www.gainsboroughfolkclub.com or call 01427 838726.
