Gainsborough Croquet Club

Gainsborough Croquet Club has had a busy couple of months.

Club players have entered competitions at High Wycombe, Budleigh Salterton and Sussex County (Brighton) in A, B, and C level competitions. A doubles competition was also played by one pair at Pinchbeck Croquet Club near Spalding. Although the weather has not been kind, everyone has enjoyed these first games of the new season with varied results.

Then, at last, some sunny days. Work proceeded on the Lawn to scarify, cut, and white line on a Tuesday, ahead a couple of games and practice shots later. A Club Day the following day attracted three new players returning after taster sessions, six regulars from Friends for Life group, and 11 club members.

Twelve people have enjoyed taster sessions after seeing the Try Croquet flyer posted around town and in this magazine, and most initially indicate at least one visit per week on a casual pay to play basis this year. There are some also thinking seriously about full memberships.

The first League match kicked off on 13th May, before which some of the players had a busy weekend:

  • A Player at Bury Croquet Club A Level Series Tournament takes five place.
  • A Player at Nailsea and District Croquet Club Championship Series Tournament takes second place, leading to an automatic entry into the National Championship Final later in the year.
  • Two players at the Lincoln Cup Singles Woodhall Spa Croquet Club Saturday have some close games.
  • Three pairs of players at the Lincoln Cup Doubles Woodhall Spa Croquet Club resulted in eighth, nineth and 12th places.

This month’s taster sessions are on Wednesdays 12th and 26th June at The Venue at Roses, Gainsborough Trinity Foundation.
