Gainsborough and District u3a

‘Detection and Avoidance of Fraud’ is the subject of the u3a’s talk on Thursday 13th June. The group was offered this session by Leicestershire Police and, because it is such an important topic, has taken the opportunity to hear it in place of the proposed social quiz morning.

The July speaker will be Keith Hanson RVM as he presents ‘Ghostly goings on at the Tower’. He spoke to the group last year and members are delighted to welcome him back.
The brighter weather helped with the Buccaneers Treasure Trail in Retford as all three groups completed the course and discovered the site of the ‘treasure’. Everyone ignored the dire weather forecasts and was rewarded by a cloudy, dry and quite warm morning. The walk took in parts of Retford some had never visited before, meeting and chatting to lovely people full of information about the town and Trinity House. Naturally the trail started and ended in a café!

Next will be a trail of Louth and an attempt to see if the Delvers tour of Gainsborough is still available. Coming up is also a visit to the Holocaust Museum and a ‘Beaver trail’ walk, planned for later in the year.

Recently, two members tried their hand at croquet at the Roses Club and were made very welcome. They operate on Wednesday and Sunday afternoons. The two members will be going back and, hopefully, improving!

Both had been brought up on a game with very complex rules and known for being quite vicious. This group plays to the rules of Golf Croquet, which is friendlier and more sociable – you can still be irritating to opponents, but not as easily! You play in pairs with chance to discuss tactics as you play. A very gentle way to spend a summer afternoon, with just some exercise, to help you pass the time.

The Friday afternoon Snooker sessions are still going ahead, though snooker is not the only activity on offer. Some members have taken to darts, dominoes and card games – whatever they fancy at the time! Everyone is welcome; come and give it a try.
