Their May lecture was entitled ‘From Downtown to Gatsby: Jewellery and Fashion’. With a passion for his craft, Andrew Prince began making jewellery from childhood. He was commissioned to produce jewels for the main characters of Downton Abbey which inspired him to create a talk based on this and the changing styles of the period portrayed.
The design of jewellery and fashion is intertwined, particularly so through events between 1890 and 1929 when the great fashion houses collaborated with the finest jewellers to produce works of art of outstanding quality and glittering opulence. Andrew also discussed the clients and patrons of immense wealth who commissioned the jewels and the inventiveness in which they were often sewn onto gowns of sumptuous fabric.
