The Friends of Bassetlaw Museum (FoBM) held their Annual General Meeting in mid-October, with around a quarter of members in attendance. The meeting covered the usual AGM business, including a summary of the year’s activities from Chair Judith Goodall. The Treasurer presented the annual financial report and provided an update on the organisation’s financial position, while the Membership Secretary’s report was shared in his absence. The existing committee was re-elected and strengthened by the addition of one new member.
Membership fees for 2026 were confirmed to remain unchanged from 2025. Members are advised to look out for an email in early December with details on how to renew their membership and the process to follow. After the formal proceedings, attendees enjoyed light refreshments before listening to a fascinating talk by Angela Anwyl on Music Making in Retford between 1896 and 1929. Her presentation was packed with local information and offered a fascinating glimpse into Retford’s musical life and related businesses during that period. Angela also explained how the museum’s archives and collections had supported her research.
The Friends’ next event will be the Christmas Crank-Up on Saturday 6th December at the museum. As in previous years, the event will feature a display of vintage tractors and steam engines, including some smaller models, along with craft stalls and children’s activities. There is also a rumour that a certain man in a red coat may make an appearance! Further details will be announced nearer the time on the Friends of Bassetlaw Museum Facebook page.
Please note that there will be no monthly museum tour in January. The first tour of 2026 will take place on Friday 6th February. As always, booking is essential via the museum or by emailing fobm.tours@gmail.com. Anyone interested in learning more about the Friends of Bassetlaw Museum, or in joining the group, can email fobm.membership@gmail.com. Membership forms are also available via the group’s Facebook page or on the Bassetlaw Museum website.
