Cooper Brown’s allotment dream

This summer, Terry and Michaela Brown applied for an allotment in Gainsborough. The Communities Officer from Gainsborough Town Council met them there, along with their son, Cooper, in August. At first glance, one might assume the plot was for the parents, to get the children outdoors and learning new skills – but in truth, the allotment was Cooper’s idea. From a young age, Cooper and his sister Aimee, now 11, were introduced to gardening by their grandparents. But his real passion bloomed at just three years old while attending Little Dragons Nursery, where his teacher, Katie, nurtured his love for nature, planting, and watching things grow.

One winter, Cooper grew a tomato plant from seed that became so large his family dubbed it the ‘tomato bush’. It soon became clear that this was no passing phase, but a genuine passion. When Cooper and his family first saw their plot, it was overgrown and in need of hard work. Two days later, another, tidier plot became available – but Cooper refused to swap, determined to take on the challenge.
Just eight weeks later, the transformation was astonishing. Together, the Browns created a thriving garden filled with carrots, broccoli, cabbages, gooseberries, figs, and even watermelon seeds ready for next year. Cooper’s goal? To pick the vegetables for his family’s Christmas dinner.

As an early birthday present, Cooper received five chickens – Bob, Chicken Letter, Hay Hay, Coco and Cluck Norris. They now provide fresh eggs each week, something Michaela loves as part of the family’s homegrown, organic lifestyle. When the hens first arrived from his grandparents, Cooper even kept them indoors for a few days, sleeping beside them to make sure they settled before moving them into their new coop, built by his dad.

The allotment has brought joy and calm to the whole family. Aimee says it helps her ‘take her mind off stuff’. Michaela feels her mental wellbeing has improved, and Terry says it’s the perfect escape from the daily rush. Together, they have discovered how powerful gardening can be for connection, relaxation and happiness. Cooper’s quiet confidence and enthusiasm shine through every time he talks about his garden. He has taught his family – and everyone who meets him – that passion and patience can grow something truly special. Cooper, you are a farmer in the making.
