Closing a successful year

Snappers Camera Club, in its current form, was established following the passing of the much-loved former leader and tutor, Alan Townsend. Members faced the decision of whether to continue the club and, if so, in what capacity. Recognising that another tutor might not match Alan’s passion for teaching and practical experience, the members opted to transform the club into a self-help group.

One of the initial challenges was overcoming a lack of self-confidence among members when speaking to the group, coupled with inexperience and the feeling that they had little to contribute. To address this, the group invited John Turner to become its leader—not as a tutor, but as a steady hand to navigate the upcoming challenges. John has excelled in this role, surpassing everyone’s expectations, including his own.

A successful formula has been developed where as many members as are willing present their images and discuss them. They might explain how the photos were taken, how they were processed, or any issues they encountered. This format allows everyone to comment in a manner that feels appropriate and helpful.

Over time, more members have gained the confidence to both showcase their work and speak about it. For those presenting digital images, speaking from the audience removes the fear of standing at the front. This approach has been highly effective.

In the past year, the club has welcomed a steady stream of new members, and attendance at meetings has remained strong. Various members have led meetings, sharing techniques or skills they have acquired.

The club has also enjoyed a number of outings to different venues, fostering camaraderie and helping members build friendships.

Regular, well-supported practical ‘tabletop’ sessions are a staple of the club. During these sessions, members bring items to photograph, and everyone can use what they like. Occasionally, a member will set up an impromptu teaching session, which has been greatly appreciated. This informal approach contrasts with more formal clubs that follow a strict programme of speakers, and it has become a core aspect of what Snappers is and does.

In November, the club held a Christmas-themed tabletop session, and in December, the results will be showcased and compared. While some scenes may be similar, this provides a good opportunity to discuss the techniques used in taking and processing the shots, broadening everyone’s perspectives.

A club highlight is the regular monthly challenge. The current challenge is in two parts: photograph a single candle, either lit or not, and then, using that candle as a light source, create a second image. Members who have taken on this challenge will present a selection of their images for discussion.

The festivities of the past year will be fond memories by the time the first meeting of 2025 arrives on Wednesday 3rd January. This meeting will include the Annual General Meeting (AGM) and an opportunity to view more images from the challenge, as well as preparations for the annual competition in February.

Snappers warmly welcomes guests and visitors to join between 1.30pm and 3.30pm on the first Friday of each month at Beckingham Village Hall. Visitors will receive a warm welcome.
