Beckingham and District Gardeners’ Club had an excellent speaker on Monday 20th March – Rachel Barrowcliffe, speaking about growing in containers and how to put the wow factor into them.
Rachel is gardener and advisor to Sir Andrew and Lady Buchanan at Hodsock Priory and the Tropical Butterfly House in Sheffield. She informed members and visitors that there are three main things to remember when assembling plants for a container, be they flowers or vegetables, if you want the wow factor. These are a Thriller (for height), a Filler (to fill the gaps) and a Spiller (for trailing over the edges).
On Monday 15th May, the speaker will be Andrew Robinson, from the National Dahlia Society, talking about Dahlias. Dahlias are very much in vogue at the moment and take many forms, from dinner plate size to small pom poms. They are very valuable to pollinators, particularly from summer onwards, and continue flowering until the frosts arrive. Andrew is passionate about growing and showing Dahlias and will share his knowledge on all aspects.
On 19th June the Club will be visiting a member’s garden, and on 17th July the Club will be visiting Pam Tatum’s Garden at Harpswell. Visitors are welcome to join them.
Anyone who is not a member of the club, but is interested in listening to any of the speakers, is welcome to go along to any meeting. The club charges £4.00 for visitors, which includes refreshments and a raffle ticket.
If you are interested in gardening, the environment or related subjects why not go along to the meetings? It is a small club and visitors will be made very welcome. As well as talks from interesting gardeners and naturalists’ members like to socialise, and have organised trips to gardens and places of gardening interest during the summer months.
