Sue Smith, the speaker at the September meeting of Beckingham and District Gardeners’ Club, spoke about ‘Hedgehogs in Need’. Sue had run 7th Heaven Hedgehog Rescue, near Retford, for many years, until she recently retired. Sue still has 12 hedgehogs, who will remain with her for the rest of their lives, as they are disabled. Hedgehogs, which are a gardener’s friend, are on the national register for endangered species in the UK.
Gardeners can make a big difference to their survival, particularly at this time of year, when they are bulking up, in preparation for hibernation. Placing a covered feeding station and Hibernation House in a quiet place, within a garden, can make a big difference to their survival, particularly over winter.
You can find out information about what to do if you find a hedgehog in need of help and details of local rescues at www.helpwildlife.co.uk. Never try to help a hedgehog yourself.
The speaker at the Club’s meeting on Monday 18th November, will be from Potterton Nurseries, talking about ‘A Beginners Guide to Growing Alpines’. Alpines are charming little plants with flowers in various vibrant colours, often produced in generous profusion.
Anyone who is not a member of the club, but is interested in listening to any of the speakers, is welcome to any meeting. The club charges £4.00 for visitors, or an annual subscription of £15.00 per member or £20.00 for a family, which includes refreshments, if you wish to join. The meetings are held in Beckingham Recreation Room and start at 7.30pm.
It is a small club and visitors or new members will be made very welcome. For more information, please contact Pat Hooton on 01427 890357 or 07776 060247.
