An active month

Retford and District Photographic Society’s most recent evenings have focussed on widely differing topics. Members enjoy practical evenings when possible and live models are a bonus. This year they had five, but probably not the sort you are thinking of! Marlies Chell returned to give them a fascinating evening photographing her different varieties of stick insect.

Insects can give some the creeps, but on this scale they are interesting and so full of intricate detail in their strange body parts that it is difficult to be anything other than fascinated and pleased to have such a special opportunity.

The following week Gary Anderson talked about how he tackles wedding photography as a business while continuing in a career in the police force. He naturally takes the shots all couples expect, but he is a very creative person and has developed his own style. He enjoys trying to take pictures which tell a story and to use different methods of shooting to create interesting effects.

The final meeting of the month saw their Print Portfolio competition, when each entry consists of four quite different images to show the versatility of the individual as a photographer. Gary Beaton was a judge who shared much about his personal tastes in different topics, and produced a single winner in both classes held on the night:

  • Colour Print Class: Joyce Bell
  • Monochrome Print Class: Andy Stephenson

The group meet on Monday nights at 7.30pm until 24th April. Full details are on www.retford-photographic.co.uk. If you contact them in advance they will look out for you or you can just go along on the night.
