A new season will soon start for the Gainsborough Choral Society, with the first rehearsal on Thursday 5th September, from 7.30pm to 9.30pm, at Queen Elizabeth’s High School, Gainsborough. The choir are an amateur choir bound together by the joy of singing, with no audition to join, the only requirement is enthusiasm as members are worked hard by their excellent musical director Richard Green.
Last year the choir marked the end of the First World War with a performance of Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem in Lincoln Cathedral, together with five other Lincolnshire choirs, one German choir, two orchestras, three conductors and the choristers from the cathedral. It was a sold-out performance, and a memorable occasion. The rehearsed throughout the summer in coordination with other choirs and it all came together in the cathedral — a difficult work which all performed well. It proved a once in a lifetime experience never to be forgotten.
More recently, the choir’s March concert was a highly appreciated. ‘A Night at the Savoy’ with a selection of Gilbert and Sullivan opera excerpts — an altogether more relaxed series of rehearsals and a brilliant finale to the season.
This season Handel’s all-time favourite Messiah will be performed at All Saints’ Church, Gainsborough, on Saturday 16th November. Carols for All is on Saturday 14th December and ‘Broadway Nights’ will be performed on Saturday 28th March 2020.
