A loving husband has thanked hospital staff for the care given to his wife by organising a charity darts tournament in her memory.
Tony Brown, from Gainsborough, held the event last year and raised £1,050 for United Lincolnshire Hospitals Charity as a way of showing his gratitude for the care his wife Sonya received after being diagnosed with lung cancer in July 2024.
Sadly, Sonya died five months later, but Tony has spoken highly of the exceptional care provided by staff on the Medical Emergency Assessment Unit and Waddington Ward at Lincoln County Hospital, where she was treated.
Tony said: “Everyone was fantastic. They gave Sonya so much time during her visits to the hospital and the support they gave to both of us was amazing.”
The darts tournament was held at Hill Top Social and Recreational Club in Gainsborough. Tony organised the event to give something back to the hospital staff and was overwhelmed by the number of people who came along to take part.
He said: “Thanks to the incredible prizes donated by local businesses and organisations we raised £1,050 for United Lincolnshire Hospitals Charity, which will help provide care for other lung cancer patients.”
Sarah Civello, Lead Macmillan Lung Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist at the hospital, remembers treating Sonya on the ward.
She said: “She was truly a remarkable lady and it was a privilege to care for patients and families as wonderful as the Browns.
“As a team we always want to give the very best to our patients and their loved ones throughout their difficult journey, and this generous donation will help provide those special touches that go beyond what NHS budgets can cover. A huge thank you.”
Tony recently met with Sarah and other members of the team who cared for Sonya when he presented the cheque to Kathryn Helley, Group Chief Clinical Governance Officer at Lincolnshire Community and Hospitals NHS Group.
