The clocks went back over a month ago, and the winter solstice – the shortest day of the year – will fall on Sunday 21st December. Looking on the bright side, from then on the days begin to lengthen, and in the meantime, Christmas is fast approaching. To help get everyone into the festive spirit, Lindsey u3a’s next General Meeting on Thursday 4th December will feature some seasonal entertainment. Tom Lane and friends will provide an entertaining morning of music, songs and seasonal anecdotes. Their performances are always popular, mixing humour with fascinating insights into the history of Christmas traditions.
Lindsey u3a is a friendly, local and welcoming group for those of retirement age who are not in full-time employment. Membership is low-cost and offers access to a wide variety of interest groups. Meetings are held at Welton Village Hall, usually on the first Thursday of each month. Visitors are welcome with no obligation to join. Doors open at 9.30am for tea or coffee and the chance to chat with group leaders in the Welton Room, followed by a guest speaker at 10.30am. The first meeting of the new year will be on Thursday 8th January, when Clive Wilson will give a talk entitled Sustainability is Key. Two years ago, Clive’s presentation inspired the creation of Lindsey u3a’s Environmental Group, which continues to encourage the collection of hard-to-recycle items such as blister packs and batteries.
The group aims to provide a wide variety of speakers throughout the year, ensuring something of interest for everyone. u3a members also have access to a programme of online talks, workshops and courses, available via http://www.u3a.org.uk. If you can’t make it to a general meeting, you can still join members at the Gardeners’ Retreat tearoom at Scothern Nurseries for a cuppa and a chat at 10.15am on the fourth Thursday of each month.
