As a nation we are living longer, and doing amazing things and living life to the full. u3a recently published a report which identifies the value of non-formal learning – whether painting, bridge, knitting, walking or learning a new language. Later-life learning is crucial for active ageing, promoting dignity, health and wellbeing.

Lindsey u3a fulfils these aims locally while being social, friendly, affordable and open to all not in full-time work. The website, http://www.lindseyu3a.org.uk, provides full details, including an A–Z of interest groups, where and when they meet, and information about visits, theatre trips, lunches and holidays, all run by members for members. The group meets at Welton Village Hall, usually on the first Thursday of the month. Doors open at 9.30am for tea or coffee and the chance to chat to interest group leaders in the Welton Room, followed by a speaker at 10.30am. Visitors are welcome to attend a meeting with no obligation. Anyone new is encouraged to tell reception on arrival, and one of the group’s friendly greeters will provide a tour and answer questions.

On Thursday 2nd October, Nick Martin will give a talk on Britain’s Best Wildlife. He oversees the management of more than 60 nature reserves for the Warwickshire Wildlife Trust and is a renowned wildlife photographer and speaker whose mission is to inspire people with his love of nature. On Thursday 6th November, Annette Mackenzie will present More About Owls with My Friend Eric. She has worked with birds of prey for many years and has previously spoken about different owl species.

Speakers are carefully chosen to provide variety, so there is something for everyone – covering almost all categories of Trivial Pursuit. Members can also join a range of online talks, workshops and courses via http://www.u3a.org.uk.

For those unable to attend general meetings, there is a monthly coffee morning at the Gardeners’ Retreat tearoom, Scothern Nurseries, at 10.15am on the fourth Thursday of each month. The next will take place on Thursday 23rd October. This is a chance for newcomers to learn more about Lindsey u3a, or for existing members to enjoy a chat over coffee and perhaps a scone.
