The Delvers local history group recently hosted the Thomas Miller – Our Old Town tour, attracting both locals and visitors to the town. Presented by Darron Childs and Helen Hagon, the tour invited participants to imagine life in Georgian Gainsborough, while discovering the stories behind the many Delvers Blue Plaques, which are set to feature in a forthcoming publication.

Throughout the tour, Helen entertained guests with readings from Miller’s classic novel Our Old Town, while Darron re-created the story of Miller’s life – a subject previously published in Golden Memories, a former Times Book of the Year. Darron and Helen are currently planning an alternative tour, which will be announced shortly on The Delvers’ Facebook group page.

The Delvers’ face-to-face meetings are also being revised and updated for the forthcoming season, with both afternoon and early evening options. These are suitable for anyone interested in local history who would like to join the Delvers fellowship group.

The Delvers meet on the second Monday of each month. The new season begins on Monday 13th October, with the first afternoon meeting taking place at Connexions, Church Street, from 2.00pm to 4.00pm. The first evening meeting will be on Monday 10th November, from 6.15pm to 8.15pm, at the Blues Club, North Street.

The Delvers’ online community on Facebook has over a thousand worldwide members. It is free to join and features posts and articles of interest to anyone with a connection to Gainsborough. The Delvers face-to-face group was founded nearly 40 years ago by Thelma Childs, making it the longest continuously running local history group.
