July was a busy month for Beckingham and District Gardeners’ Club as members visited the RHS Flower Show at Wentworth Woodhouse on 17th July and Morton Nursery and Garden on Monday 21st July. Morton Nursery and Garden is well worth a visit.
The garden, based in Babworth, Retford, is stunning, and it is hard to believe how it has been transformed from a cornfield in 2013 to its current gorgeousness. Jill McMasters, the owner, is a real plantswoman and is incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. Most of her plants, many of which are unusual, are grown on site and not imported from abroad. They are also reasonably priced.
The Club’s next meeting is Monday 15th September, when Mal Reynalds will be visiting the Garden Club in Beckingham Recreation Room at 7.30pm to talk about Growing Chrysanthemums. Mal, who lives in Lincolnshire, has won the National Dahlia Championship for the last two years, growing large single dahlias.
On Monday 20th October, Martin Fish will be talking about Perennials for All Seasons. Martin has over 50 years’ experience in horticulture and is passionate about all things gardening. He is a horticultural expert, garden writer, and broadcaster. Many local people will have heard him on Radio Lincolnshire and Gardeners’ Question Time. This meeting will be held in Walkeringham Village Hall at 7.30pm. Visitors are very welcome to attend both of these meetings.
Anyone who is not a member of the club but is interested in listening to any of the speakers is welcome to go along to any meeting. If you wish to join, the club charges £4.00 for visitors, or an annual subscription of £15.00 per member or £20.00 for a family, which includes refreshments. The meetings are usually held in Beckingham Recreation Room and start at 7.30pm.
If you are interested in gardening, the environment, or related subjects, please join them. It is a small club, and visitors or new members will be made very welcome.
