Paul Lee recently pushed his father-in-law, Barry Grocock, 13.1 miles down the Riverside Bank in Gainsborough in a wheelchair – all in aid of Prostate Cancer UK. The pair completed the route in 2 hours and 8 minutes, taking a few short breaks along the way for Barry, who is 80 years old and was diagnosed with cancer in 2022.
They met various well-wishers en-route who cheered them on, and several members of Barry’s family came out to support and watch them complete the challenge.Paul, an experienced marathon runner and Ironman competitor, had originally planned to take part in an organised event. However, he felt the terrain of most races would be unsuitable for Barry’s wheelchair. Instead, they opted for a series of loops along the Riverside path, which also made it easier for spectators to follow and cheer. The event was a great success, raising approximately £822 for Prostate Cancer UK in just three weeks. It was a particular achievement for Barry, who recently had a toe amputated and had been in hospital shortly before the event. The pair agreed that a half marathon would be a fitting challenge under the circumstances.
