In the words of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s musical extravaganza Carousel, ‘June is bustin’ out all over’ and ‘buds are bustin’ out of bushes’, so Lindsey u3a members are encouraged to put on comfortable shoes, ignore ‘a crowd of doubting Thomases predicting that the summer’d never come’ and make the most of flaming June.
By visiting www.lindseyu3a.org.uk, one can find the A–Z of interest groups that continue to meet throughout the summer months. Details of what’s on are available online, and members are welcome to join in with as much or as little as they choose.
Lindsey u3a meets at Welton Village Hall, usually on the first Thursday of the month. Guests are welcome, with no obligation, to attend a meeting. Doors open at 9.30am for tea or coffee and an opportunity to chat with interest group leaders in the Welton Room, followed by a speaker in the hall at 10.30am.
The next meeting will be held on Thursday 5th June, when guest speaker Philip Caine will present ‘Barrow to Baghdad’. Starting out as a chef, Mr Caine worked on the oil rigs in the North Sea, Algeria, Kazakhstan and Russia, then with the American Coalition in Baghdad, and later ran companies in Dubai and Iraq. His talk promises to be both humorous and inspirational.
On Thursday 3rd July, Sharon Hall, from Lincolnshire Police at Nettleham HQ, will deliver a talk on Scams and Fraud Awareness, designed to help attendees navigate the increasingly complex world of fraud and deception. Ms Hall, accompanied by a colleague, will also answer questions and provide advice on where to find support and how to recover from being scammed.
A wide range of interest groups are run by members for members, and can be viewed on the website www.lindseyu3a.org.uk. u3a members can also participate in online talks, workshops and courses, with further details available at www.u3a.org.uk.
For those unable to attend general meetings, there is also the option to meet informally at the Gardeners’ Retreat tearoom at Scothern Nurseries for a cuppa and a chat at 10.15am on the fourth Thursday of each month. The next coffee morning will be held on Thursday 26th June. Whether new to u3a or a current member, all are warmly invited to attend.
The Society also acknowledges the recent loss of Mandy Murphy, a longstanding and much-valued member who embodied the spirit of the u3a movement and will be greatly missed.
