No matter our age, it is human nature to want to step back in time – to revisit days gone by. Whether our lives have been good or difficult, we often feel a longing to return to the places and stories of our past: our first school, workplace, or local shops. Many of us feel the urge to know more about the lives of our parents and grandparents and what our town was like before familiar buildings were demolished. One day, we may find there is no one left to ask – and we regret not paying closer attention to the memories our older relatives once shared.
The old proverb ‘Time and tide wait for no man’ reminds us that we cannot halt the passing of time. We should not delay in seeking answers to our questions – for tomorrow might never come.
We are fortunate to have the Gainsborough Heritage Centre, supported by a team of dedicated volunteers. These individuals spend their time cataloguing generous donations from the public, preparing items for display in the ever-changing exhibition rooms, and compiling files and photographs for the reference room. (Photocopies are available for a small cost.) It is an excellent resource for anyone compiling a family tree, with someone always on hand to try and assist with enquiries.
The centre’s collection of Marshalls and Rose’s engineering drawings continues to be in high demand worldwide, with full-sized copies available for purchase.
Everyone at the centre plays a valuable part in keeping things running – but it would not be possible without the continued support through donations, memberships, and visitors. The team extends heartfelt thanks to all those who contribute.
The Karl Wood exhibition of churches is proving very popular. Some paintings are being displayed for the first time, so enthusiasts are encouraged to visit and take a look while they can.
The Gainsborough Heritage Centre is located on the corner of North Street (DN21 2HS) and is open on Saturdays and Tuesdays. The building is disability-friendly, with toilets and a lift serving all floors. Admission is just £3.00, and children may enter free if accompanied by an adult. The well-stocked gift shop and café are free to enter.
