The Royal British Legion

The local branch of The Royal British Legion continues to organise the Armed Forces community coffee mornings, which are proving to be very successful. It is good to see so many attending. These events are now held on the first Wednesday of the month in The Ridyard Room at The Well on Hospital Road Retford and run from 10.30am to 12.30pm. For further information ring Jane Harris on 07762 259622 or Ann Hickman on 07377 794790. As a consequence, there will be fewer branch meetings. The next branch meeting will be held at Babworth Road Sports and Social Club on Monday 2nd June at 7.15pm.

The branch has a stall on Charter Day 5th May, so call and have a chat. The official pins commemorating the 80th anniversary of VE Day are now available and will be displayed on the stall.

Along with the rest of the country, the local branch will be holding an act of remembrance at the War Memorial on Thursday 8th May at 10.45am to mark this anniversary. Everyone will be made welcome. The branch is then liaising with Bassetlaw Museum who are holding an event in their garden. There will be an opportunity to continue the celebrations with tea and cake and also share your family memories with the Museum curator. He will be on hand between 2.00pm and 4.00pm.

A generous donation means the Branch has secured a fourth commemorative bench to be placed in the Market Square. Whilst this may not be ready for VE Day, it should certainly be in situ for VJ Day in August. Plans are still in the early stages for VJ Day celebrations but there will be an act of remembrance in the morning.

Your attendance at these events is what makes them successful.
