Does the month of May bring to mind longer days, better weather, May blossom and Maypoles? Lindsey u3a hasn’t quite introduced Maypole dancing yet, but it does offer a popular Circle Dancing group – no partner required, just join the circle and enjoy the fun.

Over the coming months, visits have been arranged to gardens and places of historical or creative interest. The Art Appreciation group is set to visit the Traquair Murals at St Peter’s Church in Clayworth on Monday 21st July. For Gilbert and Sullivan fans, a theatre trip to see Iolanthe at Buxton Opera House is planned for Wednesday 13th August. All A–Z interest groups will continue throughout the summer. Visit the website to see What’s on? and take part in as much or as little as you wish.

Lindsey u3a usually meets at Welton Village Hall on the first Thursday of each month. Visitors are welcome to attend a meeting with no obligation. Doors open at 9.30am for tea or coffee and a chance to speak with interest group leaders in the Welton Room. A guest speaker follows at 10.30am.

Due to local elections and the Farmers’ Market, the May General Meeting will take place on Thursday 15th May. The speaker will be Fiona from St Barnabas Hospice, giving a talk titled ‘All you wanted to know about St Barnabas Hospice but were afraid to ask’. Fiona will share insight into the compassionate care the hospice provides to patients and families during the most difficult times.

On Thursday 5th June, the speaker will be Philip Caine, sharing entertaining stories from his journey ‘Barrow to Baghdad’. Philip began as a chef and went on to work on oil rigs in the North Sea, Algeria, Kazakhstan and Russia, before working with the American Coalition in Baghdad and later managing companies in Dubai and Iraq.

Lindsey u3a runs a wide variety of interest groups, organised by members for members. To explore what’s available, visit www.lindseyu3a.org.uk.

u3a members also have access to a range of online talks, workshops and courses. For more details, visit www.u3a.org.uk.

For those unable to attend general meetings, there’s a more informal opportunity to meet at the ‘Gardeners’ Retreat’ tearoom at Scothern Nurseries. Coffee mornings take place at 10.15am on the fourth Thursday of each month. The next gathering will be on Thursday 22nd May. Newcomers and members alike are welcome.
