Lincoln Radio Sailing Club

Model yacht racing has been around for a long time. The Lincoln Club was established way back in 1973, well before radio control became established. The club has been at various locations around Lincoln, but for the past 11 years they have been based at Scotland Farm, Thorpe on the Hill, where they have exclusive use for their sport / hobby on an old disused gravel pit.

Radio yacht racing is enjoyed by many clubs all over the UK and the world. Just recently, the World Championships, held bi-annually, took place in Australia, and the club were very proud to have two members qualify for the event which had over 80 skippers competing from across the world.

The UK has various classes, but the main classes sailed by Lincoln club are the DF65, the DF95, and the IOM (International One Metre) class. The DF65 is 65cm long and is within a suitable budget for all. A full boat and set up can be less than £300. The DF95, at 95cm long, with all rigs can be bought for around £500. This will give great racing and because all DF boats and rigs are one design, the skill factor is you.

The IOM is a step up, with many designers and choice of sailmakers, and this makes for a very competitive class, which is very well supported at the club and internationally. All the above classes are available either new or on the second-hand market, but before purchase, advice from an experienced skipper would be recommended.

The future for the club looks promising. In March 2025 they shall be holding the DF65 National Championships, and Easter weekend at the end of April will see the IOM fleet descend on the club when they hold the UK National Championships, with in excess of 85 competitors. This will include national and world champions and is the best it can get, with skill levels going through the roof.

If you are looking for your next challenge and fancy giving it a go, please do get in touch. There is much more to this sport than meets the eye, and somebody will let you have a go with their pride and joy.
