Gainsborough Heritage Centre

September is here again, and children are back at school. It has been rewarding for staff to see so many visitors at the Gainsborough Heritage Centre this summer — children with parents and grandparents — enjoying themselves as they completed the quiz sheets and received a little reward. The team also enjoys hearing visitors’ own stories about Gainsborough’s past and seeing their faces light up when they come across a photo or information connected to themselves or members of their family.

The research room on the second floor is stacked from floor to ceiling with files containing information on addresses, workplaces, schools, etc. Photocopies can also be purchased at a small cost. A friendly member of the team is always available to answer any questions visitors might have.

On Saturday 14th September there will be a book stall at Gainsborough Market, featuring many books by local authors including Andrew Birkett, Ian Palmer, Paul Kemp, Susan Edlington, the late Peter Bradshaw, and many more, as well as a selection of vintage books for collectors and lovely gifts. This event is part of the Feast celebration taking place in the town during September, so visitors are encouraged to pop along and see Karen Horner-Glister and the team to show their support.

For those interested in volunteering, application forms will be available, and the team looks forward to welcoming new members. The Gainsborough Heritage Centre is open on Saturdays and Tuesdays from 10.00am to 4.00pm, with an entry cost of just £3.00; children can enter for free if accompanied by an adult.

The centre is a charity-based organisation situated on the corner of North Street, DN21 2HS, and is disability-friendly, with toilets and a lift to all floors. There is also a cosy café selling light refreshments and homemade cake from just £3.25.
