With Easter just around the corner, children will be on school holidays. The Gainsborough Heritage Centre, open Saturdays and Tuesdays, may be good choice to spend a couple of hours with a cost that doesn’t break the bank.
The moment you walk through the doors you are transported back in time. Let children see what life was like for their grandparents and great grandparents; maybe even take those generations along to share the experience!
The ground floor features the industrial history of the town, with Marshalls, Roses, the farming and grain industries and display cabinets filled with interesting artifacts.
Clipboards are available with quiz sheets to encourage children to look closer, with a small prize at the end.
The first floor features a large exhibition room with Roman and WWII soldiers, along with cabinets containing toys from the past, clothes and accessories. Children can even try on clothes worn in times past, for a slightly different photo shoot!
Walk the little street, taking a peek in the post office, sweets and hardware shops, the 1950s sitting room and kitchen. Both young and old alike will enjoy the incredible journey.
The second floor holds dozens of folders containing factual information on addresses, workplaces, schools, etc. Copies can be made of any photos at a small cost, and the team of friendly volunteers will be on hand to answer any questions you might have.
The Centre is open on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 10.00am to 4.00pm, situated on the corner of North Street (DN21 2HS). Go along and take a walk back in time for just £3.00 (children free if accompanied by an adult) or consider becoming a member for £15.00 a year. It costs nothing to visit the shop and café.
The Centre is disability-friendly, equipped with toilets and a lift to all floors, and features a cosy café offering light refreshments and homemade cakes as well as a book shop featuring local authors, plus gifts and memorabilia. Staff look forward to welcoming you!
