Gainsborough Choral Society’s (GCS) next concert, entitled Sunset, is on Saturday 23rd March at 7.30pm in All Saints’ Church, Gainsborough DN21 2JR.
The programme has been created to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the death of Richard Rollett, who was Master Sailmaker on HMS The Resolution for Captain James Cook’s second voyage. He lived the latter part of his life in Gainsborough, was buried in All Saints’ Church Churchyard and his headstone can still be seen inside the main entrance to the church.
The main work for this concert is Rejoice in the Lamb by Benjamin Britten, and the other pieces include a number of maritime themed works by Herbert Sumsion, Herbert Parry, and two recent compositions by Finnish composer Jussi Chydenius – On a Windy Day and The Sound of the Sea. The programme is completed with the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis in C by Stamford.

Looking further ahead, the Society is holding a ‘Come and Sing’ event on 11th May, when there will be an opportunity to take part in a day’s singing with the Society for just £15.00. Pieces being sung will include numbers from The Sprig of Thyme, which was performed in November, and some of the items from Sunset. No previous experience of choral singing is needed. Information will follow in the April issue, but details, and how to apply to take part, are now available on the GCS website.
Gainsborough Choral Society, founded in 1860, is a leading choral society attracting members from Gainsborough and surrounding areas of Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire. Currently around 80 strong, the Society performs three concerts each year, normally with a full orchestra, and visiting soloists as appropriate.
Vacancies exist in all parts, and the Society would welcome new singers. No audition is required – you just need to be enthusiastic about singing!
